먼지네 (캐릭터 디자인)

I had the opportunity to participate in ‘지역 특화 자원 활용 콘텐츠 제작 지원사업’ from 전남콘텐츠코리아랩, where they would fund me to design a character and then create something in relation to a city in the Jeollanamdo province.

I chose to work with the flowers and colors of Shinan. Shinan is formed from various islands, where it is said that there are over 1000. I had the chance to be working in the area at the time. Also, I chose to refine a character I had created a few years before, Kiki, and add two new characters into the story, Kkamsi and Kuku.

Character Design and Manual Book

Kiki is based on my havanese dog that I first met while I was studying in New York. She is now living in Brazil with my aunt. The second character Kkamsi is my korean breed SapSal dog who lives with me in Korea. The third character, Kuku, is me their owner who’s soul apparently ended up being locked in their favorite doll.

Illustrations

The Munchie;s end up going to Shinan province in look for a safe home, where the dogs can live freely. They choose to explore the different islands and enjoy their time together there as a family.

5 islands were selected and I created an illustration based off of each island’s representative flower and scenery. The big exception was the last illustration which is based off of Jeungdo, and the flower I used to represent there was 꽃소금 (literally means flower salt), which refers to the flower-shaped crystals of salt.

The order of the islands and their flower is:

선도 - 수선화 (Seondo - Daffodil)

안좌도 - 아스타 (Anjado - Asta)

임자도 - 튤립 (Imjado - Tulip)

압해도 - 동백 (Aphaedo - Camellia)

증도 - 꽃소금 (Jeungdo - Flower Salt)
